Look, obviously changing the format wouldn't make it easier to read for the older versions, they don't know how to read an XML format file, just as they don't know how to read a saved game saved in a newer version. How is it on your high horse up there, nice view? *sigh*, you know pretty damn well that's not what I meant. Its currently in 2048x1024 format, see attached screenshots (first is whole map, resized down from a giant screenshot (thank god I've got 8GB of ram), and a close up of the Chicago region.Īnyone who has played Railroad Tycoon 3 should recongise the layout of the cities in this map Its also got semi accurate lakes and rivers! Its also got accurate placed towns and cities, although they do need to be tweaked a bit for the right sizes. its got one heigh glitch at the moment, but I'm working on that now. It took around 18 hours and used up around 20GB of bandwidth!, but I've just generated a realistic height map scenario of the entire USA. However, that also said, we do have the problem we have now - how can we create scenarios using a patched version that the main versions can open? The patch only affects the generation of the scenario, not the data saved within it*Įddi wrote:as i see it you have two choices at this point:ġ) create the scenarios with the patched binary, and live with the fact that they will be only useable with current ightlies, 0.7.x and laterĢ) get someone to port the patch to 0.6 branch, which might be more or less difficult, depending what the patch actually changes. That said, I guess its not often you'd want to load a file saved in a newer version! Better add a new scenario format to the 'todo' then, having such a file format these days is a bit old-school, isn't it? Surely it wouldn't be that hard to define a new file format which is less dependant on version changes? * Except Chunk IDs, but they don't really help in this case. If the savegame version has changed and it's newer than that recognised by OpenTTD, it is never going to load fine (unless the version changed without the savegame structure changing, which doesn't happen often, if at all). We've got checks for backwards compatibility so that you can load old savegames, but you have no idea what has changed in newer savegames, so there's no way to know what data's in them. No, because OpenTTD savegames (and scenarios, which are the same thing) only store data, they don't store any information about what the data is*. MGSteve wrote:Would it be easier to add a option in where you can either say yes or no to loading a scenario which was created in an later version? Fine, if it smegs up, that's your fault, but if it loads fine, you can then save it again and all should be fine. Otherwise, we'll be able to create superb scenarios but not play them in the main versions! Would it be easier to add a option in where you can either say yes or no to loading a scenario which was created in an later version? Fine, if it smegs up, that's your fault, but if it loads fine, you can then save it again and all should be fine. Hmm, does really make all the effort I've gone to useless then. But you will not be able to get them loaded in 0.6.x. If that is correct your saves should be loadable in trunk without patches I think. The reason is that trunk have many features which is not and will never be in 0.6.x.Īctually the patch you've used if I'm right it only changes the behavior of the landscape generator, not the savegame format. To your problem, you will not be able to load your patched trunk save game with 0.6.3-Rc1 even if you patch it with the patches that you did apply to trunk. Then follow the guide on the wiki for how to setup your computer to compile OpenTTD with the MSVC Express version that you installed (2003 or 2008). If you have a few gigabytes to spare you can install MSVC Express which is free of change. MGSteve wrote:I would built it myself, but I don't have MSVC.
